Support, Height and Placement

Chandelier Installation & Hanging

Four things decide how a chandelier install goes, and what it costs:

Weight and Support

A standard ceiling box holds about 50 pounds, and anything heavier hangs from the framing instead

Two-Story Entryways

A foyer fixture 18 or 20 feet up needs a lift and two electricians, which makes it a morning

Over a Dining Table

The fixture is centered on the table, which is often not where the ceiling box already is

Pendant Clusters and Multi-Light

Several pendants over an island or a stairwell, spaced on paper first because the holes are permanent

Above 50 Pounds

Ceiling boxes carry a weight rating, usually stamped on the inside, and the ordinary one is about 50 pounds. A heavier fixture has to hang from the framing instead: a metal box marked for the load, or a brace bar run between two joists. We check the rating before the old fixture comes down, because finding out then costs nothing.

Reaching a Two-Story Ceiling

An entryway chandelier is mostly an access problem. Scaffolding or a lift, two electricians, and a chain or rod cut so the fixture lands where you want it. There is no second chance at the length once the rod is cut, so we hold the fixture at the height first and get your eye on it before anything is final.

The Old Fixture

We take it down and take it and the new fixture's packaging away with us. If the new canopy is smaller than the old one and will leave a ring of unpainted ceiling around it, we tell you that before the old one comes down rather than after.

Dimmers, Bulbs and Flicker

Getting a Chandelier to Dim Properly

Most chandeliers people are unhappy with are hung correctly and switched wrongly:

LED-Compatible Dimmers

An LED chandelier on an old incandescent dimmer flickers low and often will not turn all the way down

Bulb Count and Warmth

Twelve bulbs at the wrong color temperature read cold no matter how good the fixture is

Flicker and Buzz

Nearly always the dimmer and the driver disagreeing, and not a faulty fixture

Smart Control

A smart dimmer in the wall box adds scenes and schedules without touching the fixture

If a fixture you already own flickers, hums, or will not dim below half, the dimmer is where we start, and it is a short visit and a cheap part. We fit dimmers on the rest of the room's lighting on the same visit, which is usually what people were after in the first place.

What It Costs

What Determines Chandelier Installation Cost?

Chandeliers are priced per fixture, and how far off the floor it hangs is most of the number:

Ceiling Height and Access

An eight-foot dining room ceiling is the low end, and a two-story entryway needs a lift and a second electrician

Whether the Box Is Rated

A heavy fixture needs the box replaced and braced to framing, which is the most common add on this job

Assembly Time

A crystal fixture can be hundreds of pieces hung by hand after the body is up

Switch and Dimmer Work

A dimmer where there is a plain switch is an easy add while we are there, and a separate trip later

Send us a link to the fixture and a photo of the ceiling and we can usually price it without a visit. Call (425) 202-5529 or submit the form with both and we will come back with a number and anything about the fixture worth knowing first.

“So glad I found this veteran owned company. Everything went smoothly from scheduling, a prompt arrival, and great work installing/moving my new light fixture and ceiling fan. I'll use them again for any future work.”

“ONE OF THE BEST CONTRACTING EXPERIENCES I HAVE EVER HAD. Amazing, prompt, knowledgeable, and respectful! Had 2 bathroom wall lamps that went out and didn't have the skill to put them up. They replied right away, inquired about the project and pictures, and were able to come by in a few days! On time and wonderful communication, and such an asset to the WA state electrical community. In and out in an HOUR, took out all the packaging from the new lamps, got rid of the old, just was an absolute joy to have in my home. 20 outta ten, would call again.”

Mei H.

“Showed up on time. They were professional and did a great job. Because of them, I have a fan that is remote controlled a two separate Halo lights in 3 rooms on dimmers. I'm ready for summer ☀️.”

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

A dining room fixture on a standard eight-foot ceiling, on a box that is already rated for the weight, is the low end. A two-story entryway chandelier is several times that, because of the access equipment and the second electrician. Replacing the box, assembling a crystal fixture, or adding a dimmer each add a line. Estimates are free and itemized.

Yes. It means a new box in the ceiling, a circuit run to it, and a switch on the wall, so it is a bigger job than replacing a fixture, and much easier where there is an attic or an open ceiling above the room. A dining room on the ground floor of a two-story house is the harder version, and we will tell you what getting the cable there involves before we start.

For a room, add the length and width in feet and use that number in inches as the diameter: a 12 by 14 dining room suits a fixture around 26 inches across. Over a table, aim for half to two-thirds the width of the table, and leave at least six inches of clear space on each side.

Over a dining table, 30 to 34 inches above the tabletop, a little higher for a very high ceiling. In an entryway or over a stairwell, the bottom should clear seven feet of walking space, and if there is a window above the door it looks best centered in it. We hold the fixture at the height before we make the connection final.

Yes. Centering a fixture over a table that is not centered in the room is one of the most common requests we get. It means a new box in the right place and patching the old hole, so it is worth doing before the ceiling is painted if you have the choice.

No. You pick it; have it on site and we will install it. Send us the product link ahead of time and we will flag anything that matters: a drop that is too long for the ceiling, a weight that needs a new box, or a fixture that will need a specific dimmer.

Replacing a fixture does not need one. Adding a new box in a new location, or running a new switch leg, does, and we handle the permit and the inspection as part of the work.

How It Works

From Boxed Fixture to Hung and Lit

1

Send Us the Fixture

A link to the chandelier or a photo of the spec sheet tells us the weight and the drop. Add a photo of the ceiling and one of the light switch and we can usually quote it without a visit.

2

Free Estimate

A licensed electrician checks what the existing box is rated for, the ceiling height, and the switch, then prices the support, the hanging, and any dimmer work on one itemized sheet.

3

Hung, Leveled and Dimmed

Box rated and braced, fixture hung at the height you picked, dimmer matched to the bulbs, old fixture and packaging gone, and the room tidy.
